The suspect accused of killing a health insurance boss has sensationally pleaded guilty to charges related to the assassination.
Luigi Mangione, 28, has admitted two federal charges that he stalked UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson to cause his death.
He told a court that after years of severe back pain and navigating the insurance system, he learned the company was hosting an investors conference in New York City on December 4, 2024.
Mangione was charged with ambushing Mr Thompson, 50, as the insurance executive walked to the conference.
He appeared at the Manhattan federal courtroom with his ankles shackled, wearing a beige prison jumpsuit with a long-sleeved white shirt rolled up to his elbows.
Mr Thompson’s widow looked on as defence attorney Karen Agnifilo told the judge: “Mr. Mangione is prepared to plead guilty to the indictment at this time.”
Mangione is still charged with murder in the second-degree, criminal possession of a forged instrument, also in the second-degree, and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon in state court. A trial on those state charges is scheduled to start next month.
Until now, Mangione has denied all charges related to the fatal shooting of Mr Thompson.
It had been reported by US media that he was considering a plea deal in the federal to strengthen his defence’s argument that the state charges should be dismissed. New York’s double jeopardy rules prevent someone from being tried twice for the same crime.
But US District Judge Margaret Garnett warned Mangione on Friday that his potential sentence in the state case could come consecutively.
Mangione was finally arrested after a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pennsylvania, tipped police off after a frantic five day manhunt and media frenzy.
He was found with a gun similar to the one used in the murder and also had a mask, fake IDs and pages of writings critical of the health insurance industry, cops said at the time.
