Thousands of Monzo customers have been left struggling to transfer cash or access their accounts after a major outage hit the digital bank. Frustrated account holders flooded social media to complain after the popular banking app crashed suddenly on Wednesday afternoon.

Independent outage tracking site Downdetector recorded a massive spike in user reports, logging over 3,100 complaints around 1.05pm. Normally, the status monitor sits at a baseline of zero.

Panicked users quickly turned to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their annoyance and find out if others were suffering the same fate. One desperate parent revealed the glitch had left their 13-year-old son unable to order food at a card-only venue after their transfer failed to go through.

Another distraught customer told how the app failure left their 16-year-old daughter completely stranded on the very first day of her new job, as they couldn’t send her emergency funds.

A third blasted the service for leaving them stuck mid-transaction, while others voiced fears over delayed payments, reports the Mirror.

The online-only bank acknowledged the widespread glitch and issued a statement apologising to impacted users.

A spokesperson for Monzo said: “We’re sorry for any trouble you’re having making bank transfers or using the Monzo app.

“Our team is aware of the issue and working on a fix to get things running again ASAP. Thanks for bearing with us, we appreciate your patience.”

To keep basic services running, the digital bank confirmed it has activated its independent backup system, known as Monzo Stand-in, after pinpointing the technical faults.

It said this would allow customers to make card payments, withdraw cash, freeze their card and send and receive bank transfers.

Monzo added that a fix is now actively being rolled out as engineers work to restore full service to all customers.

Santander customers have also reported issues making transactions this afternoon.

A spokesperson for the bank posted on X: “We’re aware of issues affecting some ATM services and certain transactions, and we understand how frustrating this can be. Our technical teams are investigating the cause and working to resolve it as quickly as possible.”
