Time is running out for Manchester United for secure much needed reinforcements for Michael Carrick but there has been a major update in the search for a new defender.

United have splashed roughly £150 million revamping their midfield this summer, securing Andrey Santos from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Carlos Baleba from Brighton. Nevertheless, there remain one or two voids to fill in the squad, especially at the back.

The Red Devils’ search for a new left-back has been extensively reported, although landing their top target has proved fruitless with Newcastle United maintaining that Lewis Hall will be staying at St James’ Park amid a number of high profile exits from the club this summer. Here, the Daily Star Sport looks at the latest news from Old Trafford.

New left-back priority

Manchester United are now considering a short-term fix at left-back as the transfer deadline looms closer.

Securing a left-sided defender has become a priority, with Luke Shaw entering the final year of his contract and manager Michael Carrick regarding Patrick Dorgu more as a winger than a full-back. With deals for their primary targets appearing to be out of reach, United’s alternatives are becoming increasingly scarce.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggests the club are mulling over a loan arrangement for a left-back before the window shuts, mirroring their approach when they secured Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham in 2023.

“I will not be surprised if they [United] end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee, so maybe not a superstar name like Balde, because they considered Balde… but the deal is too expensive,” he said on his YouTube show.

“But just as a comparison, you remember when United signed Sergio Reguilon? [It will be] something similar. That kind of player, an experienced left-back who can provide competition and also an international profile.”

Manchester United have reportedly been offered the chance to acquire Chelsea centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo.

The 28 year old Manchester City academy product looks destined to depart Stamford Bridge this month following his exclusion from Chelsea’s 3-2 victory over Fulham and the reassignment of his No. 4 shirt to summer recruit Valentin Barco.

According to talkSPORT, United are eager to bring in another centre-back before the transfer window concludes, offering extra depth behind Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Leny Yoro. The requirement for defensive additions has been amplified by injuries to Yoro, Martinez and De Ligt.

Tosin could be up for grabs for approximately £20m. The report further suggests that United also maintain an interest in his Chelsea colleague Josh Acheampong, but the young player is reportedly deemed ‘untouchable’ and Chelsea will not consider a sale.

Tosin was part of Manchester City’s setup for 17 years, joining the academy in 2003 before making his first-team debut in 2016. He made a mere eight appearances for City prior to his move to Fulham in 2020, where he carved out a regular role as a Premier League defender.
