BREAKING Major UK motorway closed after ‘police incident’ as whole stretch cordoned off
The M56 motorway between Chester and Runcorn has been closed since the early hours of Monday morning due to a police incident, with diversions in place as the road remains shut hours later

The M56 has been closed since the early hours following a serious accident. The motorway was sealed off just after 1.30am on Monday morning due to a ‘police incident’.
Several hours later, the motorway remains closed. Travel services report that the incident is impacting the eastbound carriageway between junction 14 for Chester Services and junction 12 for Runcorn, with the entire stretch cordoned off.
In its most recent update shortly before 6am, National Highways stated on X: “Update 3: M56 eastbound in Cheshire between J14 (Ellesmere Port) & J12 (Runcorn). – Remains closed for @cheshirepolice led incident collision investigations. – Currently no significant delays on approach.”
Travel service Inrix reported: “M56 Eastbound closed due to police incident from J14 A5117 (Chester Services / Helsby) to J12 A557 (Runcorn). Diversion – follow the solid diamond symbols via the A5117, A56 through Helsby and Frodsham, and the A557 to re-join the M56 at J12. Vehicles over 4.4m follow the X diversion symbols.”
