Woman ‘raped down alleyway’ in fashionable UK seaside city as police give assertion

A was reportedly raped in an alleyway of a popular UK seaside town, with police now appealing for witnesses.

Dorset Police have launched an investigation into the alleged attack in Weymouth town centre on Monday night. The area was cordoned off. The woman was said to have been assaulted in the area of New Street and Blockhouse Lane.

Authorities confirmed the woman is being supported by trained officers. Police haven’t made any arrests yet but officers said there will be an increased police presence in the area while enquiries continue. A spokesperson for the force said: “Dorset Police received a report at 10.46pm on Monday, August 31, that a woman aged in her 20s had been raped in New Street in Weymouth.

“Extensive enquiries are under way to establish what happened and officers have been speaking to the victim and providing support to them.

“A cordon was put in place at the scene to allow for detailed investigative work to be carried out. No arrests have been made at this time.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area. We would urge anyone with concerns to please speak with an officer.”

The area of the attack is behind the main shopping centre just off the seafront. Weymouth’s mayor, Cllr David Harris, said the incident was “very distressing”.

He said: “It is very distressing to hear of something like this happening. I know the police are doing a lot of work to keep the town safe, but sometimes something like this does happen.

“These incidents are always distressing. My thoughts are with the person who this has affected, and I hope that whoever is responsible is caught.”
