A PE teacher accused of “flirting” and having sex with a 16-year-old student allegedly requested him to address her as “miss” during their encounters, a court has been told.

Bronwen James, 30, from Chippenham, Wiltshire, is currently on trial at Winchester Crown Court. She faces four charges of sexual activity with the pupil at Bitterne Park School in Southampton, Hampshire. She denies the charges.

Edward Culver, the prosecutor, stated: “This case is about a teacher who exploited her position to engage in sexual activity with one of her students. She flirted with him, exchanged messages with him, took him to her home and she had sex with him.”

Mr Culver explained that the relationship allegedly began after the student asked for James’s Snapchat handle. Initially, she declined but later accepted, leading to an exchange of “flirty” messages, the court heard.

The prosecutor said that James first met up with the student by picking him up in her car and parking at Weston Shore, Southampton, where they shared a “kissed”.

Subsequently, the pair went to James’ residence where they “kissed and cuddled” while watching the telly, before proceeding to her bedroom where they performed sexual acts on each other and engaged in sexual intercourse, Mr Culver added.

He said that they allegedly had sex three or four times at her place and continued: “They messaged daily and she told (him) she cared about him and they even discussed moving in with each other, she told him she loved him and wanted to move away together.”

Mr Culver told the court that the student was referred to as “Number 8” in their messages, indicating he was the eighth male she had been intimate with.

In a video interview with police, the pupil claimed they “always used to flirt in lessons” before meeting up in her car. He said how the next day she approached him in class and asked him in a “flirty” way: “Where were you last night?”.

The boy claimed that their relationship escalated to having sex at her house, saying: “At the time I was overwhelmed, it was great, but looking back at it, it was wrong.”

Describing their alleged first encounter at her home, he said: “She was coming to me on the sofa, head in my lap, watching TV, her dog was there as well, just relaxing, then I leaned in for a kiss.

“We were kissing, then things progressed, I said ‘Shall we go upstairs?’, she said ‘yes’ and we had sex. She got naked and I got naked and that’s how it went.”

The boy also mentioned that during class, James, who he described as “quite attractive”, would allegedly sneak vapes into his coursework and liked him to address her as “Miss” when they were alone.

He said: “She is a bit weird but I rolled with it, it was a little bit dodge but I didn’t care.”

He also claimed how James had phoned him from her leaver’s party with other teachers audible in the background, declaring her love for him. He added: “I thought she cared about me.”

Mr Culver stated that James denies engaging in a sexual relationship with the boy and alleged that he had been “put up” by someone to level these accusations against her.
