ChatGPT, Claude and Grok all ‘go down’ as AI bots malfunction in main outage
A major global outage has hit ChatGPT, xAI’s Grok and Anthropic’s Claude, leaving users worldwide facing blank screens and error messages, with tens of thousands logging disruptions

Several major AI chat services including ChatGPT xAI’s Grok and Anthropic’s Claude have been hit by disruption, with users reporting they can’t access features or are seeing errors.
A massive, unprecedented simultaneous outage has knocked several major artificial intelligence platforms offline globally today (September 3). Users trying to access OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and xAI’s Grok have faced blank screens, failed connection warnings, and internal server errors.
This represents a near-total blackout of the primary generative AI platforms. OpenAI acknowledged “elevated error rates” across ChatGPT and Codex.
Meanwhile, Anthropic reported failures hitting multiple Claude models. Moreover, xAI confirmed Grok was down on both web and Android apps.

Secondary tools that use these AI backends (such as the coding assistant Cursor) also crashed. According to Downdetector, tens of thousands of users began reporting disruptions.
The outage hit at approximately 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM Eastern Time. It quickly disrupted developer, student, and corporate workflows worldwide.
While individual AI companies are frantically deploying fixes, early industry reports indicate the collective crash is likely due to upstream internet infrastructure issues, MacDailyNews reported. Initial spikes in error reports have been linked to cloud-hosting and content-delivery giants Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services (AWS), which much of the centralised AI ecosystem relies upon to stay online.
