Another member of Royal Family dies simply two days after funeral of beloved King
Norway’s Princess Astrid has died aged 94, the royal palace said, days after making her final public appearance at brother King Harald’s funeral, where King Haakon hailed her warmth and duty
Norway’s Princess Astrid, the elder sister of the late King Harald, has died aged 94, the royal palace said on Friday (September 11). Her brother, King Harald, died last month at 89 after more than 35 years on the throne.
Princess Astrid’s final public appearance was at his funeral on Wednesday (September 9). “Throughout her long life, Princess Astrid represented the royal house in a warm and dutiful manner,” King Haakon VIII said in the statement.
On Wednesday, just before King Harald’s funeral service began at 1pm, Princess Astrid was wheeled into Oslo Cathedral in a wheelchair. In the packed cathedral, she bid farewell to her younger brother, King Harald, who reigned as Norway’s monarch for 35 years.
Inside the cathedral, there was a wreath with a green ribbon. The message read: “Thank you for everything we have shared. Yours, Astrid.”
It was only a few days since she had sat alone by the coffin in the Palace Chapel – a quiet farewell to a brother she was closely bonded with, NRK reported. She had sat by a window at the Royal Palace, looking out over a sea of flowers as grieving Norwegians paid tribute to King Harald.
King Haakon said: “Already at the age of 22, she had to step into the role of first lady when my grandmother, Crown Princess Märtha, passed away. In her work, Princess Astrid was always particularly focused on care and inclusion for the most vulnerable in society.
“She was extremely loyal and always carried out her duties with commitment, presence and an infectious good humour.” King Haakon also described how “Aunt Astrid” was an important source of support for King Harald and the rest of the family.
“We learned a lot from her, and she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. Her passing is a great loss for us. We will miss her.
“My family and I send our warm thoughts to Aunt Astrid’s closest loved ones.”
