Huge fireplace rips by means of a historic mill utilized in Peaky Blinders and Downton Abbey

A huge fire has ripped through a historic 150-year-old building which was used in Peaky Blinders and Downton Abbey. Dramatic photos show the blaze at Dalton Mills in Keighley, West Yorks., which is being tackled by more than 12 fire crews.
Emergency services rushed to the scene to reports of a huge fire at the the mill at 8pm on Saturday night. Colossal flames can be seen through the landmark building as thick black smoke fills the air.
Built in 1869, it was once the largest textile mill in Yorkshire – employing more than 2,000 workers – but it was more recently been used as a film set for hit TV shows such as Peaky Blinders.

The fire service has advised local residents to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid travelling through the area because of the smoke.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “At approximately 8:00pm, we were called to a large fire involving Dalton Mills, Keighley. We currently have 12 fire engines at the incident as firefighters continue to tackle the large incident.
“Please avoid the area while emergency crews work at the scene. Residents nearby are advised to keep their windows and doors closed until further notice. Thank you for your cooperation. Further incident updates to follow.”

The Grade II listed former textile mill has suffered a string of major fires over the years.
It was previously left gutted following an inferno on March 3, 2022, which took more than 100 firefighters to bring under control. That blaze caused more than £15 million worth of damage. Rapist Keaton Greenman was found guilty of arson at Bradford Crown Court.
Another major fire broke out at the mill in July 2025, with 12 fire engines sent to the scene. The site also suffered a serious fire in 2011.
The historic mill was built by Joseph Craven in 1869, replacing the original mill from the 1780s, and provided jobs for workers from across the region.

Productions filmed there in recent years include The Great Train Robbery, Peaky Blinders and Downton Abbey.
The Victorian building’s historic interior had made it the perfect backdrop for the award-winning gangster drama, starring Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy.
A description from production company Screen Yorkshire reads: “The distinctive mills offer a range of large scale spaces and historic features, including a large courtyard and recently renovated clock tower.
“It is able to accommodate on site production offices and workshops and has suitable parking for facilities vehicles.
“Dalton Mills is building a strong reputation as a filming location, thanks to its diverse range of industrial spaces, which offer an historic industrial backdrop as well as set build space, making it ideally suited to period dramas.”
