A twisted sex beast who dubbed himself “The Devil” has died behind bars aged 78 while doing time for the horrific abuse of young girls.
Owen Hollern died on September 8 at HMP Edinburgh, better known as Saughton Prison, where he was serving an 11-year sentence for the historic abuse of two victims.
The Scottish Prison Service confirmed his death, with a spokesman saying: “As standard procedure with all prison deaths, a fatal accident inquiry will take place.”
Hollern was jailed after the High Court in Glasgow convicted him in December 2017 of four sex assaults and multiple charges of lewd and libidinous behaviour involving two young girls.

The court heard his abuse spanned 13 years; between 1975 and 1988, in the Dumbarton area of West Dunbartonshire. His victims were just 10 and 14 when their nightmare began.
During the trial, prosecutors laid bare how Hollern managed to hide his identity as a sexual predator for more than 40 years, STV reported. Sentencing him, Judge Johanna Johnston QC branded him a monster who inflicted “profound and long-lasting damage” on his victims.
She said he kept them petrified by “ruling over them with an iron fist”. Even after being caged, Hollern continued to cause misery.
His ex-wife Sue Kinloch was tormented by the monster from his prison cell – in letters he signed from “the Devil himself”, the Sun reported. She said he even sent a sinister picture of the Grim Reaper with the message: “party’s over”.
Describing her terror, Sue spoke out in December 2020, saying: “He’s put us through hell. He’s totally destroyed my life.

“I’m an emotional wreck and live in constant fear of him. I know what he’s capable of.
“Even though he’s in the jail I don’t feel safe.” Sue, of Argyll, revealed she had received hundreds of letters and weekly calls from Hollern when he was earlier held at HMP Dumfries.
She also claimed he used pet names like “darling” and told her that her grandsons were his. This was part of what she described as a relentless campaign of intimidation from behind bars.
Because Hollern died while under the care of the state, a mandatory Fatal Accident Inquiry will now be held to officially establish the cause of death.
