Cardiff Half Marathon runner dies throughout occasion as organisers launch assertion
A runner has died during the Cardiff Half Marathon, one of the biggest events in the UK, with organisers confirming the tragic news in a statement
Organisers have confirmed the tragic death of a participant in Sunday’s Cardiff Half Marathon. Thousands of runners flocked to the Welsh capital for the event, one of the most significant in the running calendar, which takes place along the city’s historic streets.
A spokesperson for Run 4 Wales stated: “We can confirm that a participant in this year’s event has sadly passed away. We’d like to acknowledge the event and hospital medical teams who reacted with great speed and professionalism.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the runner’s family and friends. In respect of the family’s wishes, no further details will be released.”
Reports from runners and spectators on social media indicated that at least one person received medical attention during the race, reports Wales Online.
The event has been marred by tragedy in the past, most recently in 2024 when father Stephen Jenkins, 37, died after collapsing at the finish line.
Despite the best efforts of medical and emergency teams, Mr Jenkins, who suffered a cardiac arrest, died at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
In 2019, runner Nicholas Beckley, 35, also tragically died after collapsing at the finish line.
A year prior, Ben McDonald, 25 from Cardiff, and Dean Fletcher, 32 from Exeter, both lost their lives after participating in the race.
During last year’s event, a woman collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest on Ninian Park Road.
