Portland college freshman dies and two injured after masonry column holding up hammocks collapses
A freak accident occurred on the first day of classes at Lewis & Clark College in Portland when a 19-year-old boy was killed and two others were injured when a hammock attached to a brick masonry column collapsed.
The male student, whose name has not yet been released, had been an incoming freshman at the liberal arts college.
Two 18-year-old women were taken by ambulance to hospital. One of the teens suffered an abdominal injury, and the other an arm injury, KOIN News reported.
The freak accident occurred on Monday night around 8:15pm in a central location on campus. Six students had been lounging on three different hammocks attached to the columns when one of the columns collapsed falling onto the students.
Witnesses at the scene told police they tried to perform CPR on the young man after the column fell but he had died at the scene.

The university issued a statement late Monday night sharing the tragic accident with students and teachers at the school
Portland Fire & Rescue Bureau rushed to the scene with campus security, but were unable to save the student.
Officials said that none of the students were pinned underneath the column but three people had suffered injuries.
The names of all the students involved in the tragedy have not yet been released.
Lewis & Clark officials issued a statement late Monday: ‘We are devastated to report that earlier this evening, a tragic accident occurred on the undergraduate campus in which one of our students was killed and two others were injured,’
‘We are working to contact the students’ families and will report more information as it becomes available. We are deeply saddened by the shocking loss of a member of our community.’
