Top American seed Jessica Pegula romps to victory over Viktorija Golubic in US Open first round

Jessica Pegula made light work of her first round opponent Viktorija Golubic at the US Open Tuesday, winning 6-2, 6-2 to book her place in the second round.

The match lasted just one hour and four minutes as the Swiss player could not cope with the American.

Pegula will face Elisabetta Cocciaretto or Aliaksandra Sasnovich next.

Pegula put in a dominant performance against Golubic, breaking serve on five occasions.

The American also won 83 percent of her first serve points.

Pegula entered the tournament ranked No. 8 in the world in singles by the WTA, which is the highest of any American.

And the 28-year-old has had a breakthrough year of sorts, reaching the quarterfinal of the Australian Open and French Open and reaching the French Open doubles final.

Pegula is the daughter of Terry and Kim Pegula, who own the Buffalo Bills.

Not for the first time, Pegula will attempt to keep her Open singles run alive while also playing doubles.

She’s teamed up with Coco Gauff – the pair lost the French Open final earlier this year – and they’ll play Wednesday in the first round.
