Diehard Everton fan Tony Bellew ‘petrified’ of relegation and impact it’d have on Toffees

Boxing legend and diehard Everton fan Tony Bellew described the prospect of Premier League relegation as a “petrifying thought”.

The former WBC Cruiserweight champion is one of millions of Everton fans fearing the Toffees will tumble out of the Premier League for the first time in their history. Frank Lampard’s side, who are currently languishing in 19th place, travel to East London to face West Ham United in what could be a relegation defining clash.

In the wake of players such as Anthony Gordon being harassed and chased in their car and board members being told by Toffees’ security not to come to matches due to a ‘real and credible’ threat to their safety, Bellew has been one of many high-profile Everton supporters who have tried to bring unity and calm to the fan base. However, even the Liverpudlian accepts the odds are firmly stacked against his side.

“Not happy, of course, not a single Evertonian in the world is happy right now,” Bellew firmly stated in an exclusive interview with Daily Star Sport, while talking about the new series of his podcast ‘Tony Bellew is Angry’. “We are worried and struggling.

“The petrifying thought is that Everton football club could go down. That is the position we are in at the minute.

“It’s very rare you see a team in the bottom two in January survive. So the odds are stacked against us. We are all worried and we are all scared.”

Everton narrowly escaped relegation last season, but having lost at home to 20th placed Southampton in their last match, they appear to be in even deeper trouble. And with a new stadium on the horizon. Bellew fears they are in danger of moving into it, outside of the Premier League.

He added: “Avoiding relegation is all that matters at the minute at this point right now. We are on the verge of a new stadium being built. But, let’s be honest, no one wants to see Everton play football, in a new stadium, in the Championship.

“That cannot happen. That’s a frightening thought. We have to keep our heads down and the lads have got to start getting some results. That’s the top and bottom of it.”
