Harry Kane has Tottenham over a barrel and can demand whatever wage he wants

I wasn’t surprised to read that Harry Kane is open to signing a new contract with Tottenham. He now has the club over a barrel as he knows he can demand whatever money he wants.

Even though I really fancied Manchester United to come in for Harry Kane and expected him to leave Spurs this summer, I can still see why he could yet stay put – despite the desperate lack of progress.

He’s got a wife and he’s got a family. You have to weigh all of this stuff up when you’re making a big move, particularly one as big as this.

Kane knows he risks jeopardising his legendary status at Tottenham if he was to sign for one of their Premier League rivals.

Although fans will probably understand his reasons for pursuing a new challenge, it wouldn’t sit right if he was to score goals against Tottenham. If he was to leave the club it would be taking the Hotspur out of Tottenham.

Kane can still beat Alan Shearer’s record while at Spurs and that would be such an incredible achievement. He remains the best in the business for me and that was proven on Monday night at Fulham when he was just unbelievable.

What should Harry Kane negotiate into his Spurs contract? Comment here

Harry Kane is out of contract at the end of next season

If we’re being honest, he can now ask Spurs for whatever he wants and Daniel Levy has to give him it. Back in 2021 after the European Championships when Kane wanted to join Man City, Levy called all the shots due to the length of his contract.

Now the tables have turned and Kane and his team hold all the cards as he approaches the final 12 months of his deal.

I don’t know Kane, I’m just one of his biggest fans but he might be looking at it with the mindset ‘even if I go to Manchester United, there is no guarantee we win the Premier League’.

Harry Kane holds all the power over Daniel Levy in contract negotiations now

If you look at the goals Erik ten Hag’s side have scored, United have to work for most of them. They are not tap-ins inside the penalty area.

When Marcus Rashford hits the back of the net, he still has to beat one or two players most of the time. It’s not really the Harry Kane way in my opinion.

You have to work for your goals at Manchester United whereas you don’t really have to work too hard to score goals for Manchester City.

Manchester United are set to renew their interest in Harry Kane in the summer

He might now weigh it up and go ‘you know what, I’m not sure about this one’ but then again, I might be wrong.

Things look bleak at Tottenham but if Mauricio Pochettino returns in the summer, Kane would surely love to be reunited with his old manager and it could all be very rosey again.

LAMPARD SACKING

I was sad to see Frank Lampard sacked by Everton this week as I really wanted him to be successful.

But it’s really hard to defend the decision when Everton have just been beaten by three of the teams that are virtually in the bottom four in West Ham, Southampton and Wolves.

Frank Lampard was sacked as Everton manager earlier this week

I do think Frank had the players on his side but I just don’t think they’re good enough. They have won just three of 20 matches in the Premier League this season and that is such an appalling record.

Everton are a massive club and they simply cannot afford to be relegated – they have never gone down in their life.

For that reason I’m not even sure the players will have the 30 to 40 per cent wage reductions in their contracts which is also a massive concern.

Everton have never been relegated before in their history

I hope Frank gives management another shot. I really liked what he did with Chelsea but he needs a break following a difficult spell on Merseyside.

BRILLIANT KOMPANY

When fans and pundits say coaches like Sean Dyche are only long-ball managers because they’re working with limited resources – I totally disagree.

Vincent Kompany has been brilliant at Burnley

They keep buying players to play that way! That’s why I cannot talk highly enough of Vincent Kompany, who is flying at Burnley after totally overhauling their style of play.

Since playing he’s gone back to Belgium and managed Anderlecht but he never felt he was too good for the Championship and he’s done his homework. Now it’s paying off.

I’m so impressed. He doesn’t automatically think he will be a good manager just because he was a very good player.

Kompany has got Burnley on their way to the Premier League

To be 18 points clear of third place in a league where quite literally anyone could have gone up this season – it’s nothing short of remarkable.

I’ve got to give Craig Bellamy a lot of credit as well. I like Craig and he knows his football. Both of them and their staff have done a phenomenal job, particularly given the way they’re playing.
