Sir Alex Ferguson corrected reporter’s Marcus Rashford question at Carabao Cup final

Sir Alex Ferguson had to explain that Marcus Rashford is not a striker when asked about he form of the Manchester United star.

The legendary former Premier League manager was in attendance at Wembley to see Erik ten Hag’s men lift the trophy, with Rashford on the scoresheet via a deflection in a 2-0 win over Newcastle.

Speaking to the media, Ferguson told Sky Sports when asked if he’d seen another striker with form as good as Rashford: “Well I don’t think he’s a striker.

“He operates from the left hand side which is fantastic. His finishing is always good, keeps his shots down which is really important.

“He’s in a great vein of form and unfortunately for us he’s the main source of goals, we could do with an extra one. But he’s doing it.”

Rashford has spoken in regards to his favourite position in the past, stating that he can change his mind based on the opposition.

Rashford said on Prime Video in December: “I think it depends on opposition, it depends on the personality you’re playing against.

“More often than not I prefer to play on the left but if there’s a weakness in the middle or if there’s a certain player I feel I can exploit I like to have the freedom to move and do that.”

Ferguson, who lifted 13 Premier League title as United boss, was left delighted as Ten Hag lifted his first trophy with the club after just nine months in charge.

He had said at Wembley: “United is based on success and he’s going the right way about it. The signings have been really good, that was important and he’s got a grip of the club. Which is really big for him.

“When you come to United you try and get off to a good start right away and he’s done it well. He really has.”
