MLB: Brett Baty’s family go wild for New York Mets homer in his first MLB at-bat

New York Mets third baseman Brett Baty’s debut couldn’t have gone any better. The 22-year-old hit a two-run homer in his first Major League at-bat on Wednesday in the Mets 9-7 victory against the Atlanta Braves.

Baty stepped up to the plate in his first big league at-bat and belted a ball over the right foot wall to drive home teammate Mark Canha, giving the Mets a 4-0 lead at the time.

Baty’s mother, father, sister and other relatives who flew in on short notice for the occasion leaped from their seats at Truist Parkin.

Baty was called up to the majors after only a week with the Mets Triple-A due to the injury to Eduardo Escobar, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique.

‘It wasn’t on my mind at all,’ Baty said, in reference to his super quick call up.

‘I was just thinking about winning ballgames for Syracuse. But now I’m here, so it’s about winning ballgames for the New York Mets.’

The No. 12 overall pick in the 2019 draft, Baty was hitting a combined .315 with 19 homers and 60 RBIs for Double-A Binghamton and Syracuse.

‘I’m not putting any expectations on myself,’ Baty said. ‘I’m just gonna go out there and play to the best of my ability. I’m here for a reason. I’ll let it show and do my best out there.’

The win pushed the Mets record to 76-42 and extended their lead in the National League East to 4.5 games. Atlanta’s record on the other hand fell to 72-47, pushing them further back into second place in the division. The Braves still maintain control of the NL Wild Card.
