Savvy Brit to leave UK for a few months to ‘save £500 on energy bills’

A man plans to take an ‘extended holiday’ and live abroad for a few months to avoid the rise in energy costs, which will occur later this year.

Tom Church currently spends around £180 a month on his gas and electricity but once the price cap increases in October his new estimated bill is showing as up to £625 a month

An average household’s energy bill is set to see an annual increase of between £1,600 and £3,600. In addition to rising food costs, other household bills, and high fuel costs.

Tom, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, was horrified by the predicted bills Octopus Energy quoted him so he decided to take drastic measures.

He has packed his bag and is planning to shut off his gas and electricity at home and travel to Spain and France for several months.

Tom revealed that booking Airbnb’s for a month-long stay often come with a discount, and includes all utility costs – making it cheaper than staying home.

He said: “My forecasted energy bills from Octopus Energy indicate that in January 2023 alone I will pay over £600 for electricity and gas!

“At present, I pay £180 a month for electricity and gas and I am £300 in credit.

“Despite paying more than I need to in the Summer months to save up for the Winter, Octopus suggests that unless I increase my direct debits I’ll end up in over £1,600 of debt by next June.

“That got me thinking – is there any way to pay less?

“There’s a drastic option available if you’re able to work remotely. If you pack up your bags, shut off your electricity at home and stay abroad for a few months, you can save hundreds.

“According to Moneyhelper, just last year, the average monthly cost for electricity and gas was £112, so if you want to avoid paying over £500 more in the coming months, I recommend packing your bags like me. Why not go on an extended holiday and save money while you’re at it?”
