Elon Musk’s net worth would let Tesla tycoon buy Man Utd a staggering 426 times

Manchester United fans are desperate for new owners, and their hearts must have skipped a beat when Elon Musk tweeted that he would buy the club.

The world’s richest man in 2022 tweeted: “Also, I’m buying Manchester United you’re welcome,” and sent fans into dreamland as they look to scare off the Glazer family. Although it was a joke from the Tesla founder, it’s been revealed that Musk could actually buy Manchester United 426 times based on it’s current value.

Worth an approximate £225billion, buying United would be no problem for Musk, and even if he made a loss on the purchase it’s not as if he would notice. But Musk has confirmed he would not be buying any sports team, despite admitting he grew up a United fan.

Finance experts at Merchant Cash Advance weighed up the value of England’s biggest sides, and worked out how many times Musk could purchase each club by looking at his net worth. The figures were stunning for United, but he could even afford to buy Manchester City 297 times off Sheikh Mansour.

But City’s owners are more than happy with the project they’re undergoing, and it’s United that are in a state of crisis. United have been owned by the Glazers since 2005, but patience is really starting to wear thin with multiple protests about their involvement.

A protest is even planned on Monday night, as United host Liverpool at Old Trafford. The pressure appears to be working though, as after years of ignoring claims, reports suggest that the Glazer family may be open to selling after all.

The Glazer family bought the club for £790million back in 2005, and the price quoted to buy United was £4bn last year. However, it’s likely that a fee closer to £6bn would be needed to take it off their hands in 2022.

Manchester United have had a disastrous start to the season

Unlike Musk, billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe has registered a serious interest, with the businessman also previously in the running to buy Chelsea. It seems as though Ratcliffe is ready to take on a Premier League side, but a deal isn’t straight forward.

Ratcliffe wants to take full ownership of a club, while the Glazers may only wish to sell a minority share of United. Negotiations will likely continue with the club in a total mess, but with the Glazers sitting on a gold mine, they won’t be in a hurry to leave.
