Gabby Logan mocks trolls after getting Olympic biker Tom Pidcock’s name wrong on live broadcast
Hard-working Gabby Logan has defended herself after getting Olympic gold medalist mountain biker Tom Pidcock’s name wrong during a live broadcast from the European Championships.
Logan has been central to the BBC‘s coverage of many sports events over the summer, including the Women’s Euros football tournament, and the Commonwealth Games.
However, she came under fire from trolls for saying the 23-year-old Pidcock’s name wrong during the corporation’s coverage from the European Championships in Munich – and for spelling it wrong during a subsequent tweet about the issue.
Gabby Logan confirmed getting biker Tom Pidcock’s name wrong was a ‘pronunciation’ issue
Logan has been integral to leading the BBC’s comprehensive sports coverage over the summer
Logan tweeted: ‘After 6 hours of live telly tonight with a million things going on I said Piddock not Piddcock tonight on telly and it’s the worst thing that ever happened and well worth getting angry about.’
In response to a since deleted comment, she confirmed: ‘It wasn’t a lack of prep. It was a genuine mistaken pronunciation.’
Fans were quick to offer support to the veteran television host, with one responding: ‘Honestly you have been brilliant over the last few weeks!! Im sure they’ll forgive you!!’
Fans were quick to praise Logan for her hard work over the summer, including in Munich
Another added: ‘Gabby, you are such a pro. Don’t even think about it. We are all human and occasionally make a mistake. Loved having you present the Munich event.’
Some even found the funny side, noting: ‘I mean, with a name like Piddcock that could have been a whole lot worse…’, while another tweeted ‘Jeremy Hunt might have dropped in’, in reference to a well-known previous pronunciation issue about the former Culture Secretary.
Some tweets made light of the situation, including a reference to the Jeremy Hunt issue
Pidcock is a high hope for Great Britain at the European Championships in the Men’s Cross-country event, which takes place at 4pm UK time on Friday, after winning the Olympic title last year in Tokyo.
The Leeds-born cyclist is one of two UK athletes in the race, alongside Northern Irish racer Cameron Orr.
After Thursday’s events, Great Britain were fourth on the medal table at the European Championships, with 10 golds in their total of 31 medals.
