Furious driver swings steering wheel lock at motorcyclist in highway row

  • The shock incident took place in Whitechapel, east London, on May 2

This is the terrifying moment a furious driver swung a steering wheel lock at a motorcyclist during a road rage row before being hit with a right hook in return.

In chaotic footage of the incident, a man in an orange T-shirt, blue body warmer, and jeans, can be seen squaring up to the helmet-clad biker on Greatorex Street, Whitechapel, east London.

As shocked onlookers stood by, the pair furiously battled it out in the middle of the road as they pushed and shoved one another before the driver raised his weapon.

After pushing the biker in the chest, he whacked him in the head with a heavy, metal anti-theft device before the May 2 fight turned even more sour.

The motorcyclist – donning a black jacket and orange trousers – retaliated to the violent outburst by punching the driver in the side of the head.

The sheer force of the right hook sent the driver flying towards the pavement as his glasses were knocked off his head due to the impact of the hit.

In seconds, the helmet-wearing biker had the driver shoved into a bollard on the side of the road as four concerned pedestrians dashed to the scene in a bid to break up the fight.

One person held back the motorcyclist while the other three helped the driver to his feet.

The two angrily parted ways after the onlookers’ interference and the rider walked back to his bike that was parked outside a store on the busy street.

The driver went back to his silver car parked just in front of the bike, but was spotted walking back to the middle of the road just moment later to pick up his glasses.

The shocking scene was filmed by an onlooker from a window above, who then shared the footage online.

One local said: ‘Totally pointless fighting a bloke with a lid on.’

Another added: ‘You’ll never beat a guy in a helmet. ‘Why try.’

A third joked: ‘His glasses took flight.’

One more added: ‘Whitechapel is wild.

The incident was not reported to the Met Police and no investigations are being carried out, it has been reported.

The footage of the east London road rage brawl comes less than a month after a shock new study revealed that nearly a quarter of Londoners have been attacked or threatened with violence in the past five years.

Research by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) found around 2 million people had fallen victim to violence or been threatened in the period.

More than half of those surveyed want the police to be on foot and accessible in their local area more often.

Almost two thirds of respondents also said they support the power of police to use stop and search.

The CSJ’s report, Serious Violence in London, also found crime disproportionately affects the poorest, with 40 per cent more crimes recorded in in the poorest areas compared to the richest areas.

Nikita Malik at the Centre for Social Justice, said: ’With nearly one in four Londoners attacked or threatened with violence in the last five years, it’s hardly surprising they are demanding more from the police.

‘They want them to be more visible and more proactive: conducting stop and search, involved in schools and sports clubs, and part of London’s communities.’
