Dogs and cats in for ruff summer time as tens of millions to be hit by summer time hay fever

Millions of cats and dogs are in for a ruff summer as a hay fever boom pounces on our precious pets.

Health experts have already told Brits to brace themselves for pollen bombs sweeping the nation after a flurry of sunny spells.

But vets have also warned allergy season can be just as miserable for our furry friends, with one in 10 dogs getting hay fever.

And in more bad news for mutts, vets have advised no more rolling in the grass and lots more baths and fur trimming in a bid to keep them out of danger.

A Pets at Home spokesperson said: “You may notice sneezing, red itchy eyes, a runny nose and rashes on the face or paws.”

Pet owners are being advised walk their animals at the beginning and end of the day.

Vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan, of charity PDSA, said: “You can reduce symptoms by taking dogs out when pollen is low.”

Cats can be given antihistamine tablets to ease symptoms.

A Cats Protection spokesperson said: “Some have an allergic reaction to pollen, mainly causing itchy skin. Life-long medication can be prescribed.”

Both dog and cat owners were told to take pets to a vet if they have hay fever symptoms, to rule out other problems.
