Met Office points thunderstorm warnings as Brits instructed to beware lightning

A yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of England and Wales as well as Northern Ireland.

Brits on much of the west coast of the mainland have been told they are set to be blasted by stormy conditions later on today (May 21). National forecaster the Met Office has issued the warning for much of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Wales.

Among the warnings for the storm, there are concerns that some people could experience power cuts. The storms are expected to develop in parts of the country on Tuesday afternoon and are expected to run through until around 9pm tonight, meaning Brits could be about to get battered for around nine hours.

Describing what to expect, the forecaster said: “Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost. There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.”

A separate warning is also in place for parts of Northern Ireland. Its western side is in line for a similar blasting over the same timespan, with thunderstorms also foreshadowed.
