PETA urge Gavin and Stacey character Pam to go vegan
Fans rejoiced earlier this month after it was revealed Gavin And Stacey will be returning for its last ever episode on Christmas Day.
And as viewers went wild wondering what Smithy’s answer will be to Nessa’s shock proposal and whether we will finally find out what really happened on that fishing trip, others are wondering about Pam’s vegetarianism and whether she will perhaps have turned vegan.
Pam Shipman, who is played by Alison Steadman, finds herself in a web of lies after she pretends to be a vegetarian after wrongly fearing that Stacey’s family won’t be meat eaters.
And now PETA have appealed to James Corden and Ruth Jones urging them to take Pam’s dietary beliefs one step further and make her vegan.
In one iconic episode, Pam fears she will become known as ‘Three Steaks Pam’ after she substitutes her carbs and peas for additional steaks in her last attempt at a diet.

However, PETA have suggested she becomes ‘Three Tofu Blocks Pam’ and enjoys Christmas with a meat-free centrepiece and plenty of vegan eggnog.
Composing a letter to the show’s writers, the PETA Vice President of Programmes Elisa Allen wrote: ‘By making Pam vegan for the finale, you’ll ensure that – whether or not she gets ‘drunk, drunk’ this Christmas – she’ll enjoy a ‘well lush’ spread while sparing clever pigs, curious turkeys, and industrious fish suffering.
‘This act of compassion promoting a better tomorrow for everyone would be a wonderful note on which to end such a beloved series.’
The animal rights charity believes that by making Pam a proud vegan it would help encourage viewers to indulge in their own animal-free Christmas feast.
Approximately nine million turkeys are killed for Christmas dinner each year in the UK alone, therefore every person inspired to follow Pam’s lead by going vegan would spare the lives of nearly 200 animals a year.
Furthermore, widespread adoption of vegan eating could cut global greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2050.
In a series of hilarious scenes, Pam is caught eating ham by Stacey, as the Welsh star cries: ‘You’re eating ham Pam’.
She is later forced to eat cauliflower cheese (without the cheese) while visiting Barry, after Gwen kindly cooks her a separate dish to cater to her vegetarian needs, leading Pam to quietly beg Mick to sneak her some chili.
In another heart to heart with Dawn, she confesses: ‘I can’t tell her Dawn, the lie’s too deep. I’m in it up to my neck’.

Stacey then asks whether Pam is really a vegetarian as Pam tries to pull off the facade
The last episode of the sitcom aired at Christmas 2019, and a lot can change in five years, so perhaps Pam will have embraced veganism and ditched meat for good.
Elisa wrote: ‘It’s been four years since the last Christmas special aired, and in that time, we’ve learned more about how eating meat affects animals, the environment, and human health – so it’s only right that Pam should put a vegan turkey on the table.
‘Before her brief “vegetarian” stint, Pam worried she’d be known as “Three Steaks Pam”, and we understand why she’d be embarrassed by that moniker. Raising and killing animals for food is cruel.
‘At any given time, around 23 billion animals globally are languishing on filthy factory farms. Every year in the UK alone, more than 1 billion animals are mercilessly killed for food.’
Explaining why she should embrace a new nickname, they added: ‘Conversely, by adopting the nickname “Three Tofu Blocks Pam”, the character would be a champion for animals and the planet – ditching animal derived foods spares the lives of nearly 200 living, feeling beings every year while lowering individual carbon footprint by as much as 75%!
‘She’d also be at decreased risk of suffering from stroke, heart disease, some cancers, diabetes, and other ailments. Plus, vegans are, on average, up to 9 kilograms lighter than adult meat-eaters – an aspect we know would align well with Pam’s priorities.’
They also explained that vegan Christmas food has come a long way since the characters were last on our screens, as they explained that now everything from plant-based pigs in blankets to showstopping vegan roasts are readily available.
