Brits beg for solar’s return as Met Office warning leaves UK braced for downpours

Brits are set for a return of good weather – but first, they’re going to have to suffer a drenching.

After a few days of glorious sun, it looked like the Great British Euros Election summer was well and truly under way – and then it hacked it down ever since. As anyone who has spent five minutes in the UK will know, that’s generally how it goes, but now it looks like things might just be picking up for Old Blighty.

The most recent spell of rain was particularly costly, with one person losing their life in a mudslide caused by heavy downpours in Carlton-in-Cleveland.

Forecasters including the Met Office and Exacta Weather have indicated that Brits up and down the country could be in for decent sunny spells over the upcoming bank holiday weekend – but there are a last few drips and drabs of rain to navigate first.

For some parts of the country, this is set to end up being rather more than a shower, with a yellow weather warning issued for parts of the nation.

Scotland, just north of the borders and as far north as Perth and Dundee have been issued with a yellow weather warning set to run until tomorrow (Friday, May 24) at 3am.

These grim conditions, The Met Office says, could cause, “Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible. Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer.

“Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer. Some interruption to power supplies and other services possible.”

But, things are due to get better. Posting on Facebook, Exacta Weather said this morning (May 23): “Rain peters out today for a largely settled and warm bank holiday weekend, plus high pressure and steamy temperatures to hit again within days (around next Thursday or earlier).

“Throughout this morning and into this afternoon and evening, we will see the recent and temporary unsettled weather and heavy rain showers gradually petering out and dissipating to pave the way for a relatively warm and settled spring bank holiday weekend as temperatures rise to above the seasonal average for many.”

The Met Office agreed with this, noting: “For Bank Holiday Monday showers will be more likely across eastern parts of the UK where they may be heavy, while western parts have a better chance of staying fine and dry and in any sunshine it will feel warm.

“For the rest of the week the south, especially the southeast looks as though it may see a longer spell of more settled, dry weather, while the northwest may continue unsettled with further showers, perhaps some longer spells of rain at times and here it could also become windy. Temperatures are likely to reflect this, remaining close to or perhaps a little on the cool side across the northwest, whereas the south is likely to be a little warmer than average.”

It seems Brits are desperate for the weather to make a return too. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) one person said: “The UK weather is doing its best to be as gloomy as possible today. Where’s the summer sun when you need it?”
