Properties that Wayne and Coleen Rooney may purchase in Salcombe

With eight properties priced at over £2million, there are plenty of high-end options for Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen when looking for a new home in Salcombe.

The family are said to be house-hunting in the exclusive Devon resort after Rooney, 38, was appointed as the new manager of Plymouth Argyle on a three-year deal.

The priciest home in the Salcombe area is an extraordinary £6million six-bedroom detached house in a waterfront location with direct access to the beach.

The home, called Thalassa, has more than 3,000 square feet of accommodation, much of which has uninterrupted views across the estuary. The property in East Portlemouth on the east side of Salcombe Harbour also has a private boathouse.

The second most expensive in Salcombe is a £3.5million five-bedroom property in the Moult Hill area which will no doubt appeal for its ‘privacy and tranquillity’.

There are also enough bedrooms in this contemporary home for the couple’s children – Kai, 14, Klay, 11, Kit, eight, and Cass, six – to each have their own room.

The description from estate agents Knight Frank said it has ‘five en-suite bedrooms, with a standout principal suite featuring a vast bathroom and walk-in wardrobe’, calling it ‘an ideal haven for the whole family and ideal for entertaining guests’.

Among the other most expensive Salcombe homes is a four-bedroom property with stunning coastal views for £2.95million, and a £2.5million home built into the cliffs.

The Rooneys are thought to have been searching for a property in the town which has become known for its picturesque estuary and stunning beaches but also its high prices – leading to it being dubbed ‘Chelsea-on-Sea’.

A source told The Sun: ‘Salcombe and its surrounding area are beautiful. It’s easy to see why Wayne and Coleen would look there.

‘It’s a magnet for posh public school types in red chinos and deck shoes so Wayne might stick out a bit but I’m sure he would be made welcome.’

Another added: ‘Coleen’s given her blessing to this possible move. She wants somewhere suitable for the family and they all love a beach holiday so Salcombe would be ideal.’

Salcombe is located about 27 miles south-east of Plymouth with the drive to Argyle’s Home Park stadium typically taking just under an hour.

According to property website RightMove, properties in Salcombe had an overall average price of £1,072,781 over the last year.

The majority of sales in Salcombe during the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £1,343,217.

Flats sold for an average of £773,923, with terraced properties fetching £993,667.

Sold prices in the town over the last year were 12 per cent up on the 2021 average of £957,238, but down 16 per cent on the figure in 2022.

Further north, the Rooneys have spent the last 18 months living in a £20million mansion in Cheshire after breaking the bank to finalise their dream family home.

The rural six-bedroom fortress is nestled behind a lake and spread across 40 acres of neatly manicured countryside.

The home boasts a snooker room, a home cinema, indoor swimming pool, an underground spa, wine cellar, a stable area with space for 14 horses, and a football pitch for their four sons.

The couple also loved holiday hotspot Barbados so much that they eventually splashed out £5million a rental property there in 2010.

On Saturday it was announced that Rooney had returned to management with Championship side Plymouth, after leaving Birmingham City in January following just 15 games in charge.

The ex-Manchester United striker signed a three-year deal to become head coach at Argyle after beating off strong competition for the position.

Rooney said: ‘Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I would like to thank the chairman and board for the faith they have shown in me.

‘This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army.

‘I have experienced first-hand how talented the existing group of players is here – and also the incredible atmosphere at Home Park.

‘The club is on an exciting long-term journey, with a progressive plan in place. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of it. I can’t wait for the Championship season to start in August.’

Rooney’s appointment was announced just before he appeared as a BBC pundit for the FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United, causing Gary Lineker to joke that he ‘didn’t expect his first question to be about Plymouth Argyle for this FA Cup’.

Rooney replied: ‘I’m really excited. I think obviously to go in as Argyle’s new head coach, it was a fuller process with a lot of managers who were interviewed for the job, and thankfully the club thought I was the best person for the job.

‘I’m excited to get started and meet the players, meet the staff, and obviously a lot of work over the next month before we start pre-season.’

Argyle director of football Neil Dewsnip knows Rooney from his time as boss of Everton’s academy, from which the striker emerged as a teenager.

Before his short stint at St Andrew’s, Rooney had cut his teeth in management at Derby and then in the United States with MLS side DC United.

Plymouth dispensed with the services of Ian Foster in April, just three months after he had replaced Steven Schumacher following his departure for Stoke.

The club were sitting just one place and a single point above the relegation zone at the time and that is exactly where they finished after Dewsnip and first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell guided them to three wins from their last six games, the last of them a 1-0 final-day victory over Hull which kept them up.

Nancekivell will remain at the club along with fellow first-team coach Simon Ireland and goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan, with further additions to be made in due course.
