‘Rishi Sunak should take blame for Partygate if he does not wish to insult voters’

Sunak must take blame

Rishi Sunak squirmed when reminded he had been fined over Partygate. The PM does not want voters to remember he was living it up in Downing Street while the rest of the country followed the rules.

But he should be held accountable for his record. He backed Boris Johnson for the leadership and then served in his shambolic and immoral government. He was not a bystander to lockdown rule-breaking, he was part of it.

And he is now trying to insult voters’ intelligence by claiming he is the change candidate. The truth is the Tories have not changed. Whether under Johnson or Sunak or the woeful Liz Truss, they are out of touch with real people and still believe they are above the laws they expect everyone else to follow.

The defection of Mark Logan to Labour on Thursday was further evidence that even formerly loyal Tories are no longer prepared to defend this discredited government. They realise only Labour can bring back the standards and the hope the country needs.

The full truth

The investigation into the Post Office scandal has cost taxpayers millions. Yet despite the huge resources available, it has failed to summon some key witnesses.

These include the former operations director Mike Young. When we tracked him down yesterday he admitted he would give evidence if asked.

If the Horizon inquiry is to retain the confidence of the postmasters and postmistresses it must explain why it has failed to locate a potentially important player whose testimony could be essential to uncovering the truth. If the full evidence is not heard it will raise questions over the inquiry’s eventual findings.
