Asian hornets worry as Brits arm themselves for ‘hottest summer season’ invasion

Terrified Brits are tooling up to protect themselves against swarming Asian hornets.

The invasion is expected during what could be one of our hottest summers ever.

Daniel Murry, head buyer of the Garden Department at The Range, said: “As Britain is experiencing an outbreak in Asian hornets we’ve noticed a significant increase in sales of insect repellent products. Our mesh window screens, fly repellent fans and insect repellent sprays have all been flying off the shelves.

“And since it’s predicted that even more Asian hornets will land in the UK over the summer, we’re keeping our shelves fully stocked.” Temperatures could shoot up to 34C between June and August, said the Met Office, making it ideal weather for the heat-loving hornets.

They added: “The chance of a hot summer is higher than normal.

“There is an increased likelihood of heat-related impacts.”

It said a much hotter summer is 45% more likely, with a cooler one having a 5% chance.

A report recently revealed a record number of sightings of Asian hornets in the UK last year, with the invasive species posing a serious threat to native honey bees and insect pollinators.
