The 63-year-old first noticed a ‘wet’ feeling quickly followed by a sharp pain after he let out a sneeze and cough, the American Journal of Medical Case Reports.
He lifted his shirt up out of curiosity and was met with inches of his bowel hanging out of his body.
Like a trooper, the bloke’s first reaction was to drive himself to the hospital – but the wife quickly stopped him and his hanging bowel in their tracks.
Left in a state of shock, the man then waited for an ambulance where paramedics rushed to the scene in minutes to be met with a scene like they had never experienced before.
They observed ‘large amounts of bowel’ protruding through a ‘three-inch’ opening under the man’s shirt that was now smeared with bodily fluid.
Despite being ‘unsure of the best treatment’ to cure the horror heath scare, the paramedic did know that the intestines had to be kept moist in attempts to save them and their owner.
They doused them in saline and wrapped the man’s abdomen in gauze before the quick dash to hospital.
The ‘never before seen’ sneezing accident occurred two weeks after the man underwent surgery in relation to prostate cancer.
He found himself in the scary predicament after his had his wounds looked at and sutures removed that morning.
Due to the healing process going well, the couple went to breakfast in what they thought what be a celebration to good health.
So they certainly didn’t expect the days of terror to ensue.
But, days after the operation to put his intestines back where they belong – held in by internal and external stitches – doctors deemed him fit to go home.
Hopefully the next sneeze and cough will not be badly timed…
