‘I’m a Royal Ascot vogue guru – one controversial color is fashionable this yr’
Royal Ascot is one of the biggest events in the fashion calendar.
It’s a time where people love to get dressed to the nines all while experimenting with larger than life fascinators and bold prints.
They’re certainly outfits you wouldn’t see on your average night out or especially down your local.

While some master the art of Royal Ascot dressing, some aren’t so confident in their style – and could end up with a major fashion faux pas.
With different enclosure dress codes and seeking comfort, yet style, it can be a difficult mix to get right.
That’s why we’ve had a chat with fashion expert Giorgio Ammirabile, from Consigned Sealed Delivered, to get his top tips for Ascot dressing – and one colour dress is proving surprisingly popular.
He told us: “The rule with any accessory is to make sure they match. Mixing colours or understanding which colours go together well might not be everyone’s strength.
“A helpful tip is, if you’re not sure what to do, just apply the simplest rule of all: match your fascinator colour with your bag or shoe colour. That is always a safe solution.”
Giorgio revealed the “hottest colours” of summer 2024, which have been present at this years Royal Ascot. And there are certainly some bold shades that might even get the horses’ attention.
While muted navy’s and floral prints have always been popular, Giorgio thinks Cherry Red and Liquid Gold are the big winners of this year.
The fashion guru shared: “Spring Summer 24 collections’ hottest colours are Cherry Red (Gucci, Chanel), white (Valentino, Saint Laurent, Chloe’) Blue (Bottega Veneta, JW Anderson, Ganni), Liquid Gold (Ralph Lauren, Alberta Ferretti, Jimmy Choo), Lilac (Margela, Tom Ford).
“Both in garments and accessories.”
However, Giorgio does have a bit of a controversial on one opinion when it comes to the colour of your dress. Many fashion gurus think that white is a big no-no when it comes to Royal Ascot.
Despite him encouraging the dress of bright wear, Giorgio thinks that white is the “safest” and can be the “most popular” because it’s the easiest colour to match accessories with.
While you won’t have to worry about colour clashing, other fashion experts might turn their noses up.
But, as fashion progresses, so do opinions.
And Giorgio is fully behind the white dresses of Ascot this year.
He continued: “They are safe colours and easy to wear, even for the more traditional souls.
“Among these colours, I would say that white can be the safest and most popular of all because it’s easy for everyone to wear and you can easily match any colourful accessories with it.”
So now we’ve established some of the more intricate details to Royal Ascot dressing, let’s take a look at Giorgio’s quick fire do’s and don’ts for the classy event at the races:
Do’s
- Dresses and skirts: just above the knee or slightly below the knee
- Suits: women’s suits are allowed. They must be full length with trousers reaching the ankle
- Hats: they are a must-have accessory for any Ascot event. They are a traditional part of the look, and they should be worn
- Fabrics: choose fabrics that offer a more sophisticated look such as silk, viscose, and chiffon
- Colours: solid colours are preferable
Don’ts
- No dresses off the shoulder, or strapless, or thin straps. They are not allowed by the dress code. The strap should measure 1 inch or bigger
- No excessively form-fitting/ clingy silhouettes
- No garments with crazy prints/colors. Keep it modest. Better to be very creative on the head piece
The dress code differs for each enclosure, you can access this on the official Royal Ascot website here.
