James McClean’s true emotions about Declan Rice turned clear with scathing quip

James McClean didn’t mince his words about Declan Rice with a scathing “sod off” comment five years ago.

Wrexham’s own McClean caused a stir in the footie world this week by branding the Arsenal ace “overrated” on the telly. The former Republic of Ireland star, who donned the green jersey from 2012 to 2023, was dishing out his punditry skills on RTE Sport during Germany’s 2-0 Euro 2024 victory over Hungary he aimed scathing criticism at Rice.

He boldly stated that the 25-year-old “doesn’t justify the hype”, despite having shared the pitch with him for Ireland before Rice jumped ship to play for England, reports the Express.

But it turns out McClean had already shown his true colours regarding Rice back in 2019, right after Rice decided to swap the Irish shirt for the Three Lions. McClean’s message to any other Irish player considering a switch was blunt: “sod off and play for someone else”.

The Derry lad let rip: “Rice said he was a proud Irishman. Then he said he was a proud Englishman. If he’s both… good luck to him but I don’t buy it. I think you’re either one or the other.”

“I was with Derry City when I got the call-up to play for the North (Northern Ireland), and I turned it down because it’s not my country, it’s never been my country. I’m an Irishman. It’s not just Declan, it’s anyone else. If you’re not proud to be here and we’re a stepping stone, then sod off and play for someone else.”

“I’m an Irishman. I grew up on the island of Ireland, simple as that. We only want players here who want to play for Ireland, who feel Irish and are proud to be Irish.”

Despite making three appearances in friendly matches for Ireland, Declan Rice has evolved into a top player since joining England. But his performance, along with the rest of the English squad, was far from impressive in the uninspiring 1-1 draw against Denmark this week.

James McClean made no secret of his opinion about Rice, stating, “I find with Jamal Musiala that he justifies the hype, I think that Declan Rice is very overrated. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a very good footballer but the way the English media waxes lyrical about him is completely over the top.”
