England survive enormous scare as they scrape previous Slovakia in extra-time thriller
England eked past Slovakia in a thrilling 2-1 win to move into the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.
Entering the summer tournament as favourites, Gareth Southgate’s side have been majorly disappointing in Germany as they’ve struggled to put forth any sort of momentum in the competition but they may have finally got their spark back in their victory over Slovakia.
The Three Lions were once again heavy favourites in their last 16 clash against their opponents on Sunday (June 30) but were outclassed in the first half by the Eastern European nation who grabbed the opening goal of the game 25 minutes in through Ivan Schranz.

England rarely tested Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka throughout the entire game and while they did have the ball in the net courtesy of Phil Foden, the Manchester City star was judged to be offside when he tapped home from a Kieran Trippier cross.
Southgate waited until the 66th minute to make his first substitution with Cole Palmer being introduced for an injured Trippier while Eberechi Eze soon followed. With just minutes remaining of stoppage time, Ivan Toney was brought on as an additional goal threat but it was Jude Bellingham who was the ultimate threat in front of goal.

The Real Madrid superstar has forged a knack of scoring last-minute goals for club and country this season as he continued his historic campaign with a bicycle goal beating Dubravka in the 95th minute to level the scoring and take the game to extra-time.
Southgate’s decision to bring on Toney paid off tremendously as his guided header to Harry Kane saw the Bayern Munich striker head past the Slovakian stopper just a minute into extra-time to give England a lead at Euro 2024 for the first time since his goal against Denmark 10 days ago.
It was Kane’s 14th goal for England in a major tournament and turned out to be the winner as they will now tackle Switzerland in the quarter-finals next Saturday (July 6).

With Southgate’s contract ending in December, the England boss admitted that he’s aware of the negative energy being targeted towards him from fans as he casted doubt on whether he’ll continue taking charge of the country after the Euros with the FA reportedly wanting him to stay regardless of what happens this summer.
“Our world is different at the moment and I feel that is probably because of me,” said Southgate. “I’m not going to change that so it’s pointless me spending energy (on it). But I’m not going to back away from it. I understand the feeling towards me, but I want the fans to back the players.”
