Brits are extra adventurous after they attempt new meals on vacation

A whopping seven in ten Brits are open to expanding their culinary horizons while on holiday, with exotic delicacies such as durian fruit, lions mane mushrooms and sea urchin topping the list of foods they’re eager to try.

According to a survey of 2,000 adults, half of the participants become more adventurous with their food choices when abroad, with 43% opting for local breakfast options over the traditional toast.

When it comes to culinary inspiration, British foodies are more influenced by their travels (24%) than recommendations from friends (21%) or social media trends (21%). A staggering 30% of those surveyed expressed a willingness to travel the world just to sample specific dishes.

Interestingly, 39% of Brits consider themselves adventurous eaters, with a massive 82% of these food lovers believing that a diverse diet adds excitement to their meals. Furthermore, two thirds (66%) of Brits enjoy one to four different international cuisines every week.

Brits are going wild for exotic grub, with nearly a third (29%) tucking into adventurous eats like wild rice and even 4% daring to try fermented egg. Other outlandish nosh on the menu includes raw fish and the world’s hottest chilli.

Tilda, the rice brand, did some digging and found out that Brits are mad for international flavours, which is why they’ve launched new ready-to-heat rice delights such as Saag Aloo Rice and Garlic and Herb Rice.

Anna Beheshti from Tilda said: “Travel offers a rich tapestry of culinary delights, each one a new adventure waiting to be tasted. Our research reveals that Brits are eager to try new foods while travelling, and this eagerness extends to when they’re home too.”

She also pointed out that while many Brits love to travel the world for a taste of the exotic, it’s just as fab to find global cuisine in the local supermarket aisles – a handy shortcut to adventure.

It looks like Brits are spicing up their cooking game too, with nearly half (47%) keen to cook up exotic dishes at home, and this number jumps to 65% among the young foodies aged 18-24.

With a smorgasbord of world foods just a shop away, 65% of Brits reckon they’re way more adventurous with their grub than their folks were, and over half (51%) see themselves as proper ‘culture vultures’.

Among those timeless dishes, it was Caribbean flavours that were the most craved by British food enthusiasts as 17% were eager to try the cuisine. Malaysian delights came a close second with 14%, whilst Korean cuisine also had a solid interest at 14%. Brazilian delicacies managed to tempt 13% of the population.

Tilda’s representative, Anna Beheshti, stated: “It’s inspiring to see so many people eager to explore the world of exotic cooking at home.”

She further mentioned: “Social pages are a fantastic source of kitchen inspiration, but you don’t need to journey far or eat unusual ingredients to embark on a culinary adventure.”
