‘Loneliest home’ constructed by ‘catastrophe prep wealthy man prepared for zombie apocalypse’

Everybody dreams of being cut off from civilisation once in a while.

The perfect place exists and it’s in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Elliðaey is an uninhabited island south of Iceland’s Vestmann archipelago.

Only one house lies within the rocky 4.5 square kilometre landscape with only puffins and passing ships for company. It’s how it became known as the “loneliest house in the world.”

Despite being tucked away minding its own business, the house has been the topic of many a tall tale.

One rumour suggested it was gifted to the Icelandic singer Björk by the state as a token of gratitude for her contributions to the country’s culture, while one myth is that it was used by a religious cult.

Another story was that it was built by a survivalist billionaire to take cover during a zombie apocalypse.

Others have even suggested the house does not exist at all and is merely a creation of Photoshop or AI, AD reports. But the truth of the matter seems to be a lot less exciting.

The island was home to sheep-farming families until the 1930s but its remoteness and harsh climate drove inhabitants away. In the 1950s, a hunting lodge was built by the Hunting Association for puffin hunters.

The lodge, popularly known as the Ball House, is still in use and video footage inside shows basic facilities with no running water or electricity.

Nevertheless, it’s captured the attention of many a social media influencer fascinated by the isolated building.

Even though it’s privately owned, tourists are allowed to visit ,but the journey there across the Icelandic seas is precarious with freezing temperatures and giant waves.

Once you arrive, there’s no pier so you have to jump off the boat and scale a rock face without falling into the ocean.

If you make the climb, visitors of the house will find a cosy couch, a stove, dining area, table and chairs as well as a bedroom with 10 mattresses.

Surprisingly, thousands have already added their names to a visitors’ book.

Among them is YouTuber, Ryan Trahan who spent the night there and recorded what became “the coolest experience of my life.”

In a video viewed more than 33m times, the intrepid explorer takes fans on a journey on the treacherous sea to eat “juicy steak” with two Icelandic guys who become his tour guides and explain how the materials used to build the house were all carried to the island by hand.

The video attracted over 20,000 comments.

One viewer said: “The fact that they carried all the building materials and furniture for that house up the cliff is mind-blowing.”

Another added: “This is the house I imagine you make when you start a new Minecraft survival world.”

While one wrote: “A very exhilarating journey! Thinking that you need to jump and climb the wet rocky island, yikes! Definitely a place i wanna go if i could teleport.”
