Inside late Queen’s dying as ‘world solely instructed after one factor had occurred’
The news at 6.30pm on 8 September 2022 that Her Majesty the Queen had passed away at Balmoral Castle, aged 96, rocked the nation and Royal aides alike.
The Queen left us peacefully at her beloved Scottish retreat, a place much cosier than Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. On that morning, the Queen’s deteriorating health was kept under wraps, with only a select few aware of any unusual activity.
Those in the loop at Windsor may have caught wind of something serious when the Guardian reported that “the departure of the Queen’s helicopter from Windsor Castle shortly before 7am to take the Prince of Wales from Dumfries House in Ayrshire, where he was staying that night, to his mother’s bedside, would have alerted them”.

By 10.30am, Charles had reached Balmoral, quickly followed by Camilla who travelled from nearby Birkhall. Princess Anne was already present due to being in Scotland for work duties.
The wider public got a sniff of the gravity when Buckingham Palace dropped a hint at 12.50pm announcing that William, Andrew, Edward, and Sophie were en route to Scotland. Then, around 2pm, the Sussexes announced they’d be joining as well, although Harry eventually journeyed solo.
Tragically, the family members didn’t manage to arrive in time. The Queen’s death was announced at 6.30pm, but her death certificate later revealed she had passed away at 3.10pm due to “old age”, reports the Mirror.
William and other royals touched down at Aberdeen airport at 3.50pm, a mere 40 minutes after her passing. They reached Balmoral at 5.06pm, driven by William, an hour and 25 minutes before the news went public.
By the time Harry arrived at Aberdeen airport at 6.45pm, the world was already aware. A spokesperson for Charles stated: “The public was only informed after every family member had been informed.”
However, Harry disputes this.
In his revealing book Spare, he claims he discovered his grandmother’s death via the BBC website. He wrote about receiving a call from his father, then Prince Charles, informing him that the Queen’s health was deteriorating.
However, as Prince Harry prepared to travel to Balmoral, he claimed he was asked not to bring his wife Meghan along. “When the plane started to descend I saw that my phone lit up. It was a message from Meg: ‘Call me when you get this’,” he penned.
“I looked at the BBC website. My grandmother had died. My father was King.”
