Weather specialists inform precisely when ‘humid thunder storms’ will bake and drench UK

Enjoy the last dregs of summer, because the Met Office has claimed it’s about to get very wet – and very, very humid.

While summer has largely been a damp squib for Brits in the north, August has in fact seen more sunshine than rain. But new long-term Met Office forecasts give a rather confusion outlook for the start of September, as summer appears to be clinging on for dear life while having a fight for focus with autumn.

Dated from Tuesday, September 3 until Thursday, September 12, the Met Office states: “High pressure is most likely to be located either over or close to the UK through much of this period, leading to a more widely settled period of weather for most, with some cool nights, but near or slightly above average temperatures by day.

“That said early in the period a weak showery regime may still be clearing east. Later, weak frontal systems could provide some cloud and patchy rain in north-western areas at times. There is a chance of some heavy thundery showers and more humid conditions in the south too, particularly later in the period when the high pressure may begin to drift slowly to the west

“However, many areas are more likely to be drier than normal with predominately settled weather and light wind.”

Despite the promise of humid thunder storms, there are currently no weather warnings in place up until Thursday, September 5 – although rival weather service WX Charts does show biblical rain hitting most of the north of the UK on Monday.

And looking further ahead to the end of September, it’s appears as if we’re in for a more unsettled period, as the experts claim that confidence for the continuation of settled weather falls. Instead, they add, it is more likely that there will be a return to a “mixture of weather types, with spells of wet weather interspersed with drier periods”.

“By this period it is expected temperatures will have returned to near average, perhaps slightly cooler than average in the north or north west at times,” they said.

And if you’re left wondering what the start of next week will bring, well . . . rain.

From Sunday to Tuesday, the Met Office states: “Unsettled into the new working week with a chance of showers and some longer spells of rain.”
