Premier League switch round-up as AI provides verdict – not good for Liverpool

The transfer window has officially closed, at least for a few months with some Premier League teams doing better than others, according to AI bot ChatGPT.

Two former England internationals made significant moves late yesterday (August 30), Jadon Sancho finally secured a loan move to Chelsea after finding his playing time limited at Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag leaving him out of both matches so far.

Raheem Sterling chose to leave Stamford Bridge after being snubbed by Enzo Maresca, effectively ending his Chelsea career. He’s now headed to Arsenal on loan, bolstering their Premier League campaign and turning down lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia.

Ivan Toney bid farewell to the English top flight as he joined a team in Saudi Arabia. The Saudis were also keen on Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, but the Nigerian may be left stranded as Antonio Conte has turned his back on him in Italy. In other news, Aaron Ramsdale has secured a move to Southampton, netting Arsenal £25million.

But who can go into the next weeks of the season feeling the happiest with what they got from the transfer window? The Daily Star picked the brains of an artificial intelligence to get to the bottom, which highlighted “raising concerns” after a “relatively quiet” window for Liverpool.

Of all the teams, the AI gave Brighton the highest grade of ‘A’, “with signings like Georginio Rutter and Mats Wieffer fitting [the team’s] philosophy of developing young talent.”

It added: “Losing Pascal Gross and Mahmoud Dahoud weakens their midfield, but the overall quality and depth have been enhanced, maintaining their reputation for shrewd business.”

Another high achiever in the window, according to AI, was West Ham, with “excellent business bringing in talent like Kilman and Fullkrug while managing to offload several players; losing Ward-Prowse on loan could be a strategic risk.”

Arsenal, with grade ‘B+’, was also praised. “Arsenal had a mixed window with solid signings like David Raya, Mikel Merino, and Riccardo Calafiori strengthening key areas,” said the AI.

“The influx of experienced players suggests a focus on immediate success, but the loss of future potential could hurt long-term.”

Scoring the same grade was Newcastle, who “offloaded some surplus players while strengthening key areas.”

On the flipside, the AI criticised Liverpool with Arne Slot’s team scoring the worst with a ‘C+’.

The AI said: “Liverpool’s window was relatively quiet, with Federico Chiesa being the standout signing. However, the departure of key young players like Sepp van den Berg and Bobby Clark, coupled with the retirement of Thiago Alcantara, raises concerns about squad depth and future planning.

The grading in full:

Arsenal

Grade: B+

Analysis: Arsenal had a mixed window with solid signings like David Raya, Mikel Merino, and Riccardo Calafiori strengthening key areas. However, they lost several promising young talents and squad depth, including Aaron Ramsdale and Emile Smith Rowe. The influx of experienced players suggests a focus on immediate success, but the loss of future potential could hurt long-term.

Aston Villa

Grade: A-

Analysis: Villa had a strong window, bringing in impactful players like Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen, while offloading less influential squad members. The departure of Moussa Diaby and Douglas Luiz is a setback, but the arrivals more than compensate, and they balanced the squad well with promising youth and experience.

Bournemouth

Grade: B-

Analysis: Bournemouth had a solid window, securing talents like Luis Sinisterra and Evanilson, but losing Dominic Solanke is a significant blow. The mix of experienced signings and young potential indicates a plan for both present and future, though the loss of key players like Solanke could hinder immediate progress.

Brentford

Grade: B

Analysis: Brentford made some solid signings, such as Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho, but the loss of Ivan Toney and David Raya will be felt. Their incoming players have potential, but replacing Toney’s goals will be a challenge. The team is relying on new arrivals to step up quickly.

Brighton

Grade: A

Analysis: Brighton continues to recruit smartly, with signings like Georginio Rutter and Mats Wieffer fitting their philosophy of developing young talent. Losing Pascal Gross and Mahmoud Dahoud weakens their midfield, but the overall quality and depth have been enhanced, maintaining their reputation for shrewd business.

Chelsea

Grade: B+

Analysis: Chelsea’s spending spree continues with big-name signings like Pedro Neto and Joao Felix, but the departure of key players like Conor Gallagher and Thiago Silva creates a mix of short-term gain and potential long-term issues. The loan strategy is extensive, possibly disrupting squad cohesion.

Crystal Palace

Grade: B

Analysis: Palace made strong moves, notably bringing in Eddie Nketiah and Daichi Kamada, but losing Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen will hurt. The squad has been refreshed with quality signings, though the loss of key players might impact their stability in the short term.

Everton

Grade: B

Analysis: Everton’s window was marked by the significant loss of Amadou Onana, but they compensated with smart signings like Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Harrison. The overall quality of the squad has been maintained, though the lack of a standout signing might limit their progress this season.

Fulham:

Grade: B+

Analysis: Fulham made a significant upgrade with the signings of Emile Smith Rowe and Joachim Andersen. Losing Joao Palhinha is a blow, but they balanced it with quality additions. The squad is now better equipped for the challenges ahead, though midfield depth might still be a concern.

Ipswich

Grade: B+

Analysis: Ipswich strengthened their squad significantly with the likes of Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson, while not losing any key players. Their business was focused on quality rather than quantity, which should serve them well in the long run.

Leicester

Grade: B

Analysis: Leicester had a decent window, with smart signings like Abdul Fatawu and Oliver Skipp, though losing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Chelsea is a blow. The overall balance of the squad has improved, but it remains to be seen how they cope without their departed stars.

Liverpool

Grade: C+

Analysis: Liverpool’s window was relatively quiet, with Federico Chiesa being the standout signing. However, the departure of key young players like Sepp van den Berg and Bobby Clark, coupled with the retirement of Thiago Alcantara, raises concerns about squad depth and future planning.

Manchester City

Grade: B-

Analysis: City made a big sale with Julian Alvarez departing but didn’t bring in high-profile replacements. The incoming players are talented, but the loss of a key player like Alvarez might impact their attacking options. The focus seems to be on maintaining rather than significantly improving the squad.

Manchester United:

Grade: B

Analysis: United invested heavily in players like Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, indicating a push for defensive solidity. However, they lost depth with departures like Jadon Sancho and Scott McTominay. The squad is stronger, but the balance between incoming and outgoing might take time to settle.

Newcastle

Grade: B+

Analysis: Newcastle’s window was defined by smart, strategic signings like Lewis Hall and William Osula. They managed to offload some surplus players while strengthening key areas. The squad looks more balanced, though they will miss Elliot Anderson’s contributions.

Nottingham Forest

Grade: B+

Analysis: A strong window with significant investments in key positions, but losing players like Mangala and Niakhate may impact squad depth.

Southampton

Grade: B

Analysis: Southampton made solid additions, including Ramsdale and Harwood-Bellis, but the loss of experienced players like Che Adams could be felt.

Tottenham

Grade: B-

Analysis: High-profile signings like Solanke show ambition, but the departure and failure to replace seasoned players like Eric Dier and Emerson Royal raises concerns about defensive stability.

West Ham

Grade: A-

Analysis: Excellent business bringing in talent like Kilman and Fullkrug while managing to offload several players; losing Ward-Prowse on loan could be a strategic risk.

Wolves

Grade: B

Analysis: The departures of key players like Pedro Neto and Max Kilman weaken the squad, but smart signings like Rodrigo Gomes and Tommy Doyle help mitigate the losses.
