‘Rashford is making a mistake staying at Man Utd – even when Ten Hag is sacked’

Marcus Rashford is in danger of becoming a loser.

So much so that he’s spent the international break posting videos on social media of himself doing private training sessions. That’s because he’s lost his place in the England set-up, despite a change of manager.

He’s also lost his confidence, sparkle, ability to score goals and even the backing of his own Manchester United supporters. Not to mention his driving license, following a speeding conviction.

At least Rashford has realised hard work will present him with the best chance of digging himself out of the black hole he now finds himself in. So he took to the pitches of various non-league clubs, including Ashton United, West Didsbury and Chorlton, to go through a number of drills with members of RH Elite Coaching.

That’s quite a turnaround for someone who not too long ago, chose to use some of his spare time going on a booze bender in Belfast. This landed him in hot water with Erik ten Hag, and it feels like the relationship between manager and forward has not been the same since.

But if Rashford is hanging around at United in the hope Ten Hag will be sacked, he’s making a big mistake. Not because the Dutchman won’t be axed, because he will.

But because it has looked and felt for a while like Rashford is the bloke who should have departed Old Trafford instead. Rashford might feel like United is his hometown club and runs through his DNA.

But it’s also a club which will allow him to let his once-promising career fade to nothing, without a sniff of ever landing a Premier League title, should he allow it to. Rashford will turn 27 on Halloween, and instead of approaching his peak with enthusiasm, hope and belief, he’s now the lead character in a genuine horror show.

Down in London, it didn’t take Raheem Sterling long to realise he needed to exit the footballing mad house that is Chelsea. Like Rashford, Sterling has also been cast aside by England, while seeing his club career lurch from one disappointment to another.

So he chose to do something about it – and joined Arsenal on-loan. And with one swish of a signature on his new contract, Sterling looked like the weight of the world had been lifted from his shoulders.

He couldn’t have looked happier. Because he knows he’s joined a club capable of turning him into a winner again, like he used to be under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

He might be approaching 30, but Sterling could also finish this season with another title to add to his collection. And who knows? He could also find himself back in the England set-up.

Rashford, meanwhile, is languishing in the bottom half of the league table with United, wondering where his next goal will come from, let alone win. He hasn’t scored a league goal since March, and has just eight of them to his name in the last 12 months.

We all know how talented Rashford is. But what the bloke himself has failed to grasp is that United are no longer the club to get the best out of what the footballing gods gave him.

And if he doesn’t do something about it, we could be forced to endure seeing one of the great unfulfilled talents drift through mediocrity like a lost soul.
