How Dave Grohl gushed about ‘placing his daughters first’

Dave Grohl stunned the showbiz world on Tuesday when confessed that he’d fathered a baby daughter outside of his marriage to wife Jordyn Blum.

The Foo Fighters hitmaker, 55, may be best known for his heavy rock tracks, but has also openly discussed his dedication to his family, and his three daughters Violet, 18, Harper, 15, and Ophelia, 10.

Since becoming a father for the first time, Dave has offered glimpses into his home life in a string of interviews, insisting he’s always put his ‘family first’.

This dedication has included pulling out of gigs when they clash with important family events, and ensuring he does the school run every single day, however he has never been as eloquent about his 21-year marriage.

Now, speculation is now rife over whether Dave and Jordan’s marriage will survive his shock confession of infidelity, with sources previously claiming he’s already retained a divorce lawyer.

MailOnline takes a look at some of the moments that Dave has gushed about his life as a doting father, before the idyllic famly image was shattered…

Saying they ‘don’t care’ he’s a rock star

Before confessing to his shock infidelity, Dave Grohl was seen as one of Hollywood's most dedicated dads, gushing about his daughters Violet, 18, Harper, 15, and Ophelia, 10.

While Dave has enthralled millions with his hit tracks as a member of The Foo Fighters, he has previously said his children aren’t interested in his career.

In an interview shared by SPIN back in June, he said: ‘Having children that don’t f****ng care you’re a rock star.

‘My kids don’t give a s**t if I’m in Foo Fighters. They’re like ‘Daddy, I need a smoothie. Now.” I’m like ”OK…”

In 2008, the music artist opened up to People at the time about how parenthood has changed both him and Blum.

‘We don’t talk about how much we drank last night [anymore],’ he told the outlet. ‘[Now] it’s how much sleep we got, how much sleep the baby got, diaper rash, formula.’

‘We used to go on the road for three months at a time. It’s a struggle for me to leave for even 12 days. I realised the life I always imagined beginning once the band ended has to begin now.’

In a 2018 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Dave admitted that he turned down huge gigs after being told that he could miss one of his daughter’s birthdays, and even flew back from Australia between shows to attend a father/daughter dance.

He said: ‘There are times when I get a call from the manager, ”hey you’ve got an offer to play this huge gig”, and I have to ask my daughter ”I know this is the day after your birthday but should I play this show or not?” and she says ”absolutely not, it’s the day after my birthday!”

‘And I’ve got to call my manager and say ”sorry, got to do it.”

I’ve had some pretty ridiculous, there was once when the girls’ school had the Daddy Dauhter dane and it was a day off between Adelaide and Perth.’

Dave then implied that he flew all the way back to the US from Australia between the two gigs to attend the dance, adding: ‘You got to do what you got to do!’

Showing he’s always happy to support his daughter’s endeavors, Dave has even displayed his dance skills by taking part in a TikTok dance trend with his daughter Harper.

In a video posted by Harper in July, the duo offered their take on the Charli XCX Apple dance trend.

She appropriately captioned the post: ‘Dave Grohl is in his Brat era.’

Harper also has musical talents, and while appearing on The Graham Norton Show in 2021, he recalled the special moment when Paul McCartney gave Harper her very first piano lesson.

‘We have wine and pizza and we’re hanging out, and it was time for Paul to go,’ Dave explained at the time.

‘Paul and [his wife] Nancy were leaving, and there was a piano in the corner of the room, and he just can’t help himself.’

Grohl added, ‘So he sits down at the piano and starts playing Lady Madonna in my f***ing house! My mind is blown. I can’t believe this is happening. This is like the most full-circle, crazy moment of my entire life.’

The star then shared, ‘[Harper had] never taken a lesson to play any instrument at that point, and she sat down and she watched his hands.’

‘They sat together, and he was showing her what to play, and they wrote a song together.’

Harper is also no stranger to performing with her father on stage. Back in 2018 during a benefit concert, she notably played the drums with Dave and sister Violet as they performed The Sky Is a Neighborhood.

Doing the school run

Dave has previously shared how he is determined to take his daughters to school every morning, and offered a glimpse into his morning routine during an appearance on Ellen in 2014.

He explained that his day starts at 5:45am, and after he wakes up his daughters for school, and said he has to prepare their ‘snack packs’ for the day.

Dave then continued: ‘While I’m getting the snack packs going, they come into the kitchen, and then I get the breakfast going.

‘Once they’ve had breakfast, I get them dressed, and they get dressed and then I get the backpacks and the snack packs into my minivan.

‘And then I get them in the minivan and sit in traffic for 45 minutes, and then I get them to school, and then I drive 45 minutes back to my house, and then I start my day.’

It comes after it was reported that Dave, 55, had already retained a divorce lawyer prior to his confession of infidelity.

In early August, Jordyn, who has been married to the rocker since 2003, may have hinted to some marital strain as she opted not to wear her engagement ring on a seemingly tense outing together in Los Angeles.

A source told People that Grohl had retained a divorce attorney before his social media announcement.

This comes just one one day after confessing that he welcomed a daughter with an undisclosed woman in a statement posted to Instagram.

The statement read: ‘I’ve recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage. I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her.

‘I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. We’re grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together.’

The rock star, who has often been described as a ‘family man,’ has spoken about the importance of his family in interviews throughout the years.

In 2007, Grohl told The Guardian, ‘[My wife] Jordyn and [daughter] Violet are anchors that keep me from completely disappearing.’

Speaking to TIME in 2012, he said his family ‘changed everything that I do.’

He added: ‘It’s changed everything that I do. When you have kids, you see life through different eyes. You feel love more deeply and are maybe a little more compassionate. It’s inevitable that that would make its way into your songwriting.’

Grohl divorced his first wife Jennifer Leigh Youngblood in 1997 after admitting to cheating.

While little is publicly known about Blum, People reported she once appeared on the cover of Teen – after being discovered at a supermarket when she was 12.

News of Grohl’s infidelity comes after he was last seen with Blum at Wimbledon in July.
