Two big emus go on the run in UK city and chase youngsters in comedy escape

A pair of rogue emus have been causing chaos in a Suffolk market town, chasing children and forcing vehicles to swerve out of their way.

The large birds were first seen near a football ground in Hadleigh on Monday. Shocked locals later reported seeing them strolling down the high street, causing traffic to divert. One social media user claimed one of the birds had chased her two nieces.

A Babergh District Council spokeswoman said: “This is no laughing matter for residents who have raised concerns over the welfare of the birds and for wider public safety.

“However, our community safety team is now in discussion with police colleagues to see how we may help to resolve the matter in the interests of all concerned.”

She added that emus are not covered by legislation they regulate, so no licence is required to keep them. However, she confirmed that their community safety team is liaising with police to resolve the issue.

A Suffolk Police spokesperson said they were “aware of the issue” and were working with other agencies, the council, and the birds’ owners to keep them secure.

This incident follows a similar one in May when an emu was rescued from a river in the town and returned to its owner. Emus are large flightless birds native to Australia.

They can display aggressive behaviour and are known to lash out with their legs.
