Gen Z going through ‘grownup wipeout’ and will stay in utter filth at UK universities
As more than 300,000 18-year-olds gear up to leave home and head to university, Gen Z is often hailed as tech and gadget whizzes.
However, fresh research from Currys suggests they might be in for an “adulting wipeout” when it comes to operating basic household appliances. The only devices their parents believe they’re truly proficient with are the reliable microwave and air fryer!
The report claims that 75% of dads are concerned about how their kids will maintain their living space clean, compared to only 59% of mums. It also revealed that more than a fifth (22%) of dads are planning to purchase smart tech, such as robot vacuums, for their children when they move out.

In contrast, only 14% of mums feel the need to invest in high-tech gadgets, perhaps preferring their offspring to learn the hard way. While an impressive 94% of parents are confident their kids can manage microwaving their meals, almost half (49%) express some concern about their ability to use the hob.
However, the ultimate kitchen gadget, the air fryer, seems to have the backing of most parents. A whopping 59% believe their children will become air fryer experts, making it the culinary MVP.
In a bid to help, Currys has given one of their user guides a makeover that resonates differently. Currys’ very own TikTok star ‘George’ is stepping in to address parents’ biggest worries with his ‘how to use a washing machine’ guide, transforming dull, ‘dead’ and ‘wet’ household tech into something Gen Z can vibe with it’s subtly lit.
Lara Britain, Currys Category Director, remarked: “Gen Z might run the digital game, but when it comes to handling home tech, 16-18-year-olds are still figuring it out.To do our bit to help, as thousands of UK teens prep for uni life, Currys has given their user manual how to use a washing machine – a TikTok glow-up with someone Gen Z can actually vibe with.”
