Ex-England star did not get to see daughter, 21, one final time earlier than her dying

The daughter of an ex-England cricketer is at the centre of an inquest after she died from suspected sepsis just two days after being admitted to hospital.

Steve James, who played cricket for England, was heartbreakingly absent when his daughter died, as he was covering a Six Nations’ match in Ireland and adverse weather conditions delayed his return. At the pre-inquest review in Pontypridd, South Wales on Wednesday, it was stated that sepsis is believed to be the medical cause behind Bethan Amy James untimely death.

Area coroner Patricia Morgan will investigate the circumstances leading up to her death, scrutinising her medical history, treatment by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board from January 27 to February 9, 2020, and the events surrounding her hospital transfer on February 8.

In the wake of losing Bethan on February 9, her grieving dad honoured her memory on Facebook, writing: “We have the most indescribably devastating news that our beautiful daughter Bethan suddenly passed away on Saturday evening. Our hearts are broken.

“She was the most wonderfully caring and kind daughter and sister to Rhys.” The inquest into her sudden death will probe the possible delays concerning her transfer to hospital and eventual admission.

At the pre-inquest review, details of the evidence, witnesses, and potential dates for concluding the inquest were hashed out between the coroner and parties involved Bethan’s family, CAVUHB, and the Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust eyeing a time frame between early and mid-2025.

In a heart-wrenching post from 2022, James shared: “When I left, I didn’t actually go up and see Bethan, I shouted to her and said ‘goodbye’ from downstairs. The next time I see her she’s lying dead in a hospital. That’s something that’s going to stay with me for the rest of my life,” reports the Mirror.

Bethan, who was pursuing her studies at the University of South Wales, fell ill unexpectedly. James, after hanging up his cricket bat, took to sports journalism, becoming known for his coverage of rugby and various other sports.
