Deer ‘roaming freely at stately residence’ have children placed on them by reckless mother and father

Reckless parents have been caught plonking kids on deer roaming free at a stately home.

Now National Trust bosses at historic Dunham Massey have been forced to erect signs warning visitors ‘don’t ride the deer’. The info also includes pictures to illustrate the advice non-verbally.

Staff at the Cheshire tourist destination have tackled mums and dads in the act of placing kids on the backs of the fallow deer that inhabit the grounds of the 17th country pile.

One National Trust volunteer told us: “It really beggars belief that we have to put up signs telling people not to ride the animals. People are so entitled these days and want the ultimate photo for social media. These are wild, roaming animals and not donkeys on the sands at Blackpool.”

A spokesman for the National Trust confirmed that staff had reported incidents of parents lifting their toddler-age kids on to the backs of the deer

The good cause added: “The deer at Dunham Massey roam freely in the parkland meaning our visitors can get quite close to them. However, they are a wild herd, and we ask people to be mindful and view them from a distance.

“We have signage in place – which also includes illustrations to help cross language barriers and be clear for children – asking them to help us look after the deer by keeping their distance, not picnicking in that area, keeping dogs on leads and not being tempted to feed or touch them.”
