Boy, 16, dies after being hit by practice as coroner suspects ‘demise is unnatural’

An inquest has been launched following the tragic death of a teenager who was struck by a train near Wildmill station in Bridgend. The deceased, identified as 16-year-old Brendan Thomas Moore, was pronounced dead on Saturday, September 14.

The inquest, which opened in Pontypridd today (September 25), heard from Coroner’s officer Keeley Mason that emergency services were called to the scene around 11.30pm after receiving 999 calls from the public.

Brendan Thomas Moore was identified through fingerprint analysis on September 15. The British Transport Police (BTP) reported his death to the coroner on September 16.

A postmortem examination was conducted by Dr Nadine Burke on September 20. The preliminary cause of death was listed as multiple catastrophic injuries due to impact with a moving train, reports Wales Online.

A toxicology report is pending.

Ms Mason confirmed that Brendan’s family had verified his address as Highland Place, Bridgend, and his date of birth as December 12, 2007. Assistant coroner for South Wales, Kerrie Burge, postponed the full inquest to a later, yet to be confirmed, date.

As reported by Wales Online, she stated: “Based on the evidence this morning I am satisfied it is necessary to open an inquest into the death of Brendan Thomas Moore. There is reason to suspect his death is unnatural…further evidence needs to be gathered therefore the inquest is to be adjourned to a later date.”

She concluded the opening by extending her deepest sympathies to Brendan’s family.

A British Transport Police spokesperson had stated: “We were called to an area of the line close to Wildmill station at around 11.15pm on Saturday 14 September following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Officers attended along with paramedics but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are currently working to establish the full circumstances behind the person’s death.”
