Reason why Liverpool’s pen in opposition to Chelsea was overturned regardless of Sanchez ‘foul’

Liverpool thought they had the chance to double their lead in the first-half against Chelsea when they were awarded a spot-kick.

Chelsea’s shot-stopper Robert Sanchez came flying off his line, clattering Curtis Jones, sending him front-flipping over the Spanish keeper. However, after referee John Brooks was sent to the monitor, the decision was overturned.

And the Premier League has shed light on the controversial call to scrap a second penalty for Liverpool. The official Premier League Match Centre X account shared why the penalty was binned: “The referee awarded a penalty to Liverpool for a foul by Sanchez on Jones.

“The VAR deemed that Sanchez won the ball and no foul was committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.”

Earlier in the match, Liverpool had bagged a penalty when Levi Colwill was caught tripping up Jones, leading to Mohamed Salah slotting home despite having a previous shout for a pen dismissed.

Meanwhile, Chelsea were left fuming as they felt they deserved a spot-kick of their own following a tussle between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jadon Sancho, but VAR didn’t step in this time, reports the Liverpool Echo.

It all came in a hotheaded encounter where Tosin Adarabioyo also avoided a red card for a foul similar to what had seen William Saliba handed his marching orders against Bournemouth.

Mike Dean explained: “It’s completely different to yesterday. There’s too much doubt involved it. The ball is going towards the officials on the side.

“For me it’s the correct decision.”
