‘World’s scariest haunted home’ accused of ‘real-life torture’ refuses to close

The “world’s scariest haunted house” is refusing to close despite ongoing calls for it to be shut following disturbing reports that it is “traumatising” visitors.

McKamey Manor, in Tennessee, US, is considered one of the most terrifying houses in the world. Owned and operated by Russ Alan McKamey, the haunt has come under fire in recent years after it emerged participants are routinely tortured and “trapped in a horror movie”.

Some visitors alleged they were even forced to yank their own teeth out with pliers and to this date nobody is said to have ever made it through the full experience. The owner McKamey recently confirmed to the Daily Mail it is still open and operating as usual despite complaints from visitors who encounter alleged “inhumane treatment”.

“If all of those crazy horrible things said about me are true, I wouldn’t be free, running around doing what I want to do,” he told the publication.

It comes less than a month after attempted murder, rape and domestic assault charges against McKamey were dropped after the owner’s arrest in July this month. According to The Tennessean, McKamey was accused of strangling and raping a woman later identified as his girlfriend.

WKRN reported Tennessee Attorney General Jonathna Skrmetti launched a probe after concerns grew over practices in McKamey’s detached house where the ‘Manor’ is also based.

District Attorney Brent Cooper told WKRN a witness alleged seeing “a woman dragged behind a vehicle”.

It’s been previously alleged that some visitors have pulled their own fingernails out, endured broken bones, been drugged with a few even forced to consume their own vomit, locked inside coffins, or had fingers caught in mouse traps. Initially, brave souls are reported to have endured up to 10 hours of gruelling torment in hopes of snagging the £15,300 prize money which has since been discontinued as it lured “crazy” individuals willing to “do anything” for the cash.

Before participating, visitors are presented with a catalogue of 100 possible horrors, allowing them to set only two hard limits. The experience proves too much for most, with the average participant giving up just eight minutes in.

Entrants must be at least 21 or 18 with a nod from their parents, succeed in a physical check-up, clear background scrutiny and a social media inspection, pass a substance screening and show valid medical insurance to take part.

Last year McKamey Manor was the subject of a Hulu documentary which alleges: “By cultivating an online persona and a cult-like following, Russ was allowed to display his basest instincts and rewarded with online fame and notoriety. Driven by his personal fixations, he turned his backyard haunt into a bona fide torture chamber.”

In response, McKamey struck back at the documentary and told the Sun: “It’s just one-sided hate propaganda from people that actually know better but are looking for their 15 minutes of fame. They truly are obsessed with me.

“It’s very misleading. I hope people realise this. It’s not even about McKamey Manor, it’s all about me, trying to make me look bad. That was their agenda.”
