Body discovered looking for lacking paddleboarder Simon Daniels after ‘capsizing’ in reservoir

The desperate search for missing paddleboarder Simon Daniels has ended in heartbreak after a body was found at Dovestone Reservoir. Greater Manchester Police have confirmed the news this evening, bringing a tragic close to the hunt for the Cheshire personal trainer.

The search began on Sunday (October 20) when a man and woman were seen struggling in the water at the Oldham beauty spot. It’s thought they were paddleboarding when disaster struck, using an inflatable board.

Emergency crews, including the Coastguard and Mountain Rescue, swarmed the area, managing to save the woman who was later treated for hypothermia and shock. However, Simon Daniels was less fortunate, encountering serious trouble in the chilly waters.

After days of searching, police divers made the sombre discovery at 6.15pm tonight (October 23). Simon’s family are now dealing with the devastating news, while authorities have stated his death appears non-suspicious.

Oldham CID’s Detective Inspector Laura Crossley shared: “Throughout this tragic incident we have been in close contact with Simon’s family and will continue to offer them our support as they come to terms with their loss.”, reports the Mirror.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious and the scene has now been closed. A report is being prepared for the coroner. We appreciate the public’s support in enabling search teams to carry out their investigations, we understand the inconvenience this may have caused over the last few days, but it was important we conducted a full and thorough search for Simon.”

In the wake of Mr Daniels’ disappearance, his friends and family flooded social media with heartfelt messages. One post read: “Winsford is at a very heartbreaking standstill at the moment all hoping and praying for your safe return, but also understanding that may not be the case. But you have a town praying so hard for you right now. With love and support.”
