UK climate maps flip white as large snow blast to stretch as far south as Devon

The UK is bracing for a deep freeze as shocking new weather maps predict a snow blast and sub-zero temperatures. The latest forecasts show the maps turning white and purple – indicating snowfall – across large parts of Britain in just over two weeks.

The date to watch out for is Friday, November 8, with the snowy conditions stretching as far south as Devon and the south coast of England. WXCharts’ maps suggest that areas around Aberdeen could see as much as 10cm per hour of snow on the day – but everywhere from Wick on Scotland’s North coast down to Edinburgh should also brace for snowfall.

A large part of Wales also looks set for snow as the maps have turned purple there too – from the Dee Valley in the north down to Pontypridd in the south. England isn’t exempt, with snowfall predicted around Exmoor National Park, Devon, and even as far south as Plymouth, on the border with Cornwall.

It’s expected to be significantly colder too, with temperatures dropping to as low as -2C in the snowy regions of Scotland and Wales, reports the Express. However, weather expert Jim Dale, senior meteorologist and founder of British Weather Services, believes we’re actually in for mild weather.

Purple on the maps depict snow – and here most of Scotland is covered

He stated: “The main theme between now and then is mild/warm and dry to very dry. One might even suggest an ‘Indian Summer’ Oct 27 onwards through the first week of November. There’s a [warmer] bias to the south and south east of England.”

The Met Office’s long-range forecast, spanning from Thursday, November 7 to Thursday, November 21, hints at a chilly twist with “colder interludes possible” but stops short of promising snow.

The forecast reads: “A change in the broad weather pattern over the UK is expected towards mid-November and beyond, as high pressure initially over the nearby continent tends to become more focussed to the north or northwest of the UK.”

The chilliest weather is predicted in Scotland and Wales

“This may allow areas of low pressure, south-shifted from their more typical tracks, to approach southern UK and bring rain or showers at times.

“As a result, after a relatively dry start to the month in the south and east it is likely to become wetter than average here, while conversely northwestern areas, after a wetter start to the month, will tend to revert to drier than average conditions.

“Temperatures will probably be close to average for much of this period as a whole, although some colder interludes are possible.”
