Channel 4 axes fan-favourite drama after only one sequence regardless of rave evaluations and a string of awards

Channel 4 has axed a fan-favourite drama after just one series despite it getting excellent reviews and a string of awards

The hard-hitting show which fans dubbed ‘harrowing’, followed a teenager being violently attacked at an illegal beach rave.

The attack sends shockwaves through a Merseyside community as friends and family try to seek out the truth by unveiling people’s deepest secrets and lies.

The Gathering starred Sherlock star Vinette Robinson, 43, as Natalie, a woman who is dubbed the ‘mother from hell’, with her daughter, Jessica, played by Sadie Soverall, a talented teen gymnast.

The show also starred Ten pounds Poms star Warren Brown who played Paul, who was facing jail after a vicious bust-up in a park.

The star took home the Best Actor award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in June for his performance.

And Eva Morgan, who played Paul’s gymnast daughter, won Best Actress with the show itself picked up Best Series.

Despite a slew of gongs, executive producer Simon Heath told The Sun: ‘The series performed very well for Channel 4 but there are new people in charge and new priorities, meaning The Gathering won’t be coming back.’

But some viewers may be pleased to hear the show has come to an end after provoking a strong online reaction.

Fans were left sickened by the abusive scenes, the rest of the show failed to grip them, with many admitting they struggled to stick with it.

They rushed to X, formerly Twitter, to share their thoughts, with many commenting on the toxic mother-daughter relationship of the leads.

Viewers watched on as Jessica tried to please her mother’s strict and overbearing standards and the fallout of not being picked for a gymnastics team.

Indignant on her daughter’s behalf, Natalie even threatened to to move her from Liverpool to the city’s rival area Manchester, leaving all her friends and family behind.
