Ruben Amorim breaks silence over Man Utd job after Erik ten Hag is sacked

Ruben Amorim played it cool when quizzed about the possibility of taking over the reins at Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag was given the boot on Monday after a dismal 2-1 loss to West Ham, plunging United into their worst-ever start to a Premier League season. Sitting uncomfortably at 14th in the standings, United have handed the temporary baton to Ruud van Nistelrooy while they hunt for a new boss.

In a statement, the Red Devils said: “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Sporting Lisbon’s main man Amorim is in the frame thanks to his sterling work in Portugal – with Sporting sitting pretty as reigning champs and boasting an unblemished domestic record this term.

Bookies are tipping Amorim as a hot favourite for the Old Trafford hot seat, and he’s also been touted as a possible heir to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

The Red Devils, who’ve had their eye on former Barcelona boss Xavi and England’s ex-skipper Gareth Southgate, would need to cough up a hefty sum to snatch Amorim from Portugal.

When prodded about the United gossip on Monday, the 43-year-old kept quiet about what lies ahead. He stated: “I was expecting that question and obviously I’m not going to talk about the future.

“Because otherwise I’ll always have to comment, so it’s not worth it, I won’t comment. I’m very proud to be the coach of Sporting, that’s all,” reports the Manchester Evening News.
